Department of Computer Science t 303 349 2867 Clayton Lewis, Emeritus Professor f 303 492 2844 430 UCB clayton.lewis@colorado.edu Boulder, Colorado 80309-0430 www.cs.colorado.edu/~clayton April 10, 2023 To: Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award Committee, Re: Letter of support for Neil Soiffer As a member of the former DIAGRAM community, organized by to the social-good nonprofit Benetech to support the development of technology to support learners with disabilities, I had frequent occasion to collaborate with Neil Soiffer. Neil was a regular participant in code sprints organized by the community, which gave me a chance to interact with him in person. As general co-chair of the international Web4All 2020 conference, I invited Neil to serve on the program committee for that event, which he agreed to do. In all of these interactions Neil has demonstrated both technical skill and dedication. His skills were key in his contributions to consequential developments like MathML. Neil entered the field of accessible mathematics as an established innovator and expert in symbolic mathematics, dating to his dissertation work on that topic in 1991, and he made excellent use of that background. His dedication is apparent in his sustained efforts to support blind users of symbolic mathematics over 25 years. The dedication continues to the present, as seen in his current work on the MathCAT library. MathCAT supports presentation of MathML in a variety of accessible modes, including Braille and speech, as well as supporting accessible navigation within mathematical content. Neil Soiffer has been a sustaining contributor in the field of accessible mathematics for decades. The Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award would be very well-deserved recognition. Sincerely, Clayton Lewis Emeritus Professor Member, ACM SIGCHI Academy
