April 13, 2024 Dear Award Committee members, It is my pleasure to write this letter in support of Tina Herzberg, Susan Osterhaus, Sara Larkin and Penny Rosenblum’ nomination for the Dr. Jacob Bolotin award. Their book “Learning and Teaching the Nemeth Code within UEB Contexts: A Step-by-Step Guide” has been an essential tool for students with visual impairments and for current and future teachers in the VI field. I have personally used their book during my Nemeth Code class at Cal State University, Los Angeles and appreciated how well-structured and organized the book is. Learning and Teaching the Nemeth Code within UEB Contexts: A Step-by-Step Guide” Book has given me the opportunity to build my Nemeth Code skills and provided me with strategies on how to teach the Nemeth code to my students. Currently, I work as an intern teacher of students with visual impairments, and I use this book to teach the Nemeth code to my students. The organization and clarity of this book reflects the authors’ thoughtful consideration of learning needs, ensuring that concepts are conveyed in a structured and comprehensible manner. The authors are dedicated to maintaining and adapting the Nemeth Code book, which guarantees that this valuable resource continues to meet the evolving needs our students. The book is also available for free, ensuring that individuals who rely on braille have equal access to educational materials in these specialized fields. This accessibility supports the continuous learning and independence of visually impaired students and professionals. I hope you consider Tina Herzberg, Susan Osterhaus, Sara Larkin and Penny Rosenblum for the Dr. Jacob Bolotin award because of their significant contribution towards supporting students who are visually impaired and their commitment to creating a more inclusive society by supporting the educational and professional growth of individuals with visual impairments. Sincerely, Amal Boulaid Intern Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments
