Dear Bolotin award committee, This correspondence is to recommend White Canes Connect to receive a 2024 Jacob Bolotin award. As a member of the National Federation of the Blind, I am well aware of the Braille Monitor being the flagship periodical for the blind community. However, in telling the stories of blind people, I firmly believe that White Canes Connect has the potential to be a vital media component within the blind community. Based out of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania, White canes Connect has not only told the stories of blind people within the state of Pennsylvania, but they have interviewed and highlighted stories of blind people across the United States. On multiple occasions, I have appeared as a guest on the phenomenal program and the questions that are solicited by the host afforded me the opportunity to openly express and share my prospective on societal attitudes that have created barriers for blind people. I often listen to episodes of White Canes Connect which has effectively highlighted leaders within the blind community, services and programs that support blind people and impactful discussions on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. the production of this podcast is high quality and you would think it was supported by a major media network. However, Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein have created a professional podcast that you can obtain on all major platforms. When agreeing to write recommendation letters for awards such as the Jacob Bolotin award, I want to be sure that I am supporting an individual or program that can create systemic awareness about the capabilities of blind people and the White Canes Connect Podcast fits my criteria. Once again I highly recommend White Canes Connect to receive a 2024 Jacob Bolotin award. Shawn M. Callaway President of the National Federation of the Blind of the District of Columbia
