Dear Committee for the 2024 Dr. Jacob Bolotin Awards, I am writing to you to provide a strong recommendation for Dr. Hyung Nam Kim, an esteemed colleague and Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University. I have had the pleasure of mentoring Dr. Kim since he joined our faculty in 2017 and have been consistently impressed by his dedication to improving the lives of people with visual disabilities. Dr. Kim's remarkable dedication, combined with his innovative disability research, make him an outstanding candidate for this prestigious award, Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award. Dr. Kim's scholarly contributions are notable for their depth and impact, significantly advancing our understanding of the challenges faced by people with visual disabilities, particularly in relation to technology. He has explored how both mainstream and assistive technologies can be leveraged to address these challenges. His research champions universal designs, empowering people with visual disabilities and improving the quality of life. For instance, his work on empathy and emotional intelligence in cyberspace sheds light on how people with and without visual disabilities express, understand, and share emotions online. This research has the potential to inform the development of more inclusive online communication tools for people with visual disabilities. In addition, his research on assistive technology informs the development of accessible and user-friendly applications for this community. Moreover, Dr. Kim's impact extends beyond academia, as evidenced by his success in securing research grants to study and advance the quality of life among people with visual disabilities. His disability research projects were well acknowledged and funded by the National Science Foundation to support the development of a loneliness monitoring tool and the development of an innovative Design Thinking by incorporating emotional intelligence for people with visual disabilities. These projects highlight Dr. Kim’s dedication to translating research findings into practical solutions that improve the lives of people with visual disabilities. Furthermore, Dr. Kim's dedication to community outreach underscores his passion for making a tangible difference in the lives of people with visual disabilities. His collaborative efforts with the North Carolina Lions Club’s Summer Camp Dogwood for People with Visual Disabilities exemplify his commitment to empowering independence through technology and education. For example, his research team visited the camp and taught campers with visual disabilities how to use smart technologies such as voice-activated navigation apps and screen readers. In summary, Dr. Kim's exemplary achievements, unwavering dedication, and impactful contributions to the field of visual disabilities make him an exceptional candidate for the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award. I wholeheartedly endorse his nomination and am confident that his continued efforts will further advance the well-being and inclusivity of people with visual disabilities. Sincerely, Steven Jiang, PhD Associate Professor Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering North Carolina A&T State University (336) 285-3726 xjiang@ncat.edu
